To join a session, please just contact Mark via email or phone and you will be added to the list. You will then also receive the regular Wimborne Guitars updates. If you wish to pass any material on to someone else, please ask them to register at the Wimborne Guitars web site. Thank you.

Getting in tune If you prefer to tune by ear rather than tuning by using a guitar tuner, you can download this .M4A file to help you. If you have problems playing the .M4A files, after you have downloaded the files, right click on a file and select OPEN WITH. Then select WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER to play the file.

If you prefer a guitar tuner, Snark tuners are reasonably priced and work very well. Other brands are available too.

Session 18:

Beginners:
Session 18 for the Beginners group will be focused on learning in detail how to play "Streets of London" by Ralph McTell. We looked at this song back in Session 9, but did not really get into the detail.

Besides being a beautiful song, it's a great song to use as practice for playing finger style guitar. Once you have mastered the chords of the song and the timing, you can then branch out into playing the finger picking parts. Please print out the handouts below and bring them along to the session, if you have not already printed this material.

Please Note: you may find it helpful to play the song with a capo, so
please bring your capo with you if you have one.

Session 17:

In this session we'll be looking at playing tunes on the guitar rather than focusing on playing chords. The material we're uing in this session will get us started in playing lead guitar. To begin with, we're going to look at some traditional tunes which we'll play as rounds. This will help us get started with playing parts within the group too.

Please print out the handouts below and bring them along to the session. As usual, please also bring all your music from previous sessions as we'll be playing some of the other songs too.

Session 16:

This session is a joint session with beginners and intermediates all playing together. It's our last session before the Easter break, so we'll make the most of our time together by spending time playing the songs we've learned so far and looking at some of the trickier details of the music.

We'll also be taking a look at how to get the greatest benefit from our practice sessions at home. There is a new handout below to help give you a few ideas about practicing.

Please print out the handouts below and bring them along to the session. Please also bring your music sheets along to the session so you are ready to play the songs.

Session 15:

In this session we'll be looking at a new song, the old Big Bill Broonzy number "Key to the Highway".

The session builds on what we looked at in session 14, but if you didn't attend that session, don't worry. We'll be tackling the song from scratch, so everyone can be included.

Please print out the handout and music below and bring them along to the session. I've also included the usual practice track in the key of G and also a couple of YouTube videos so you can see how others tackle the song.

You may also find the handouts from session 14 useful for this session, too.

Session 14:

Well, we had to get there at some point and Session 14 is the time to take a first look at playing blues guitar. In this session we'll be starting with the basics and using the song "Amazing Grace" as our first venture into blues playing. We'll be making a few changes to the way we play the song so that it fits the blues style.

Please print out the handout and music below and bring them along to the session.

(Note: at first we will leave out some of the chord changes. We will only use the chords A, D and E. Additionally, we'll be changing the timing from 3/4 to 4/4. Don't worry, all will be explained at the session!)

Session 13:

Bob Dylan's classic song "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" is the subject of this session. Whilst the song sounds like a simple folk song, when we look at it in more detail we realise there are hidden depths which make it a very fulfilling song to play.

Please print out the handout and music below and bring them along to the session.

Session 12:

Session 12 is all about broadening our playing scope. In the beginners session we'll be continuing our work on how to learn a new song, but this week we'll be looking at some of the more tricky bits of a song and how we can master these elements. The intermediates session will be broadening out further; looking at ways we can begin playing in styles which are less familiar to us and thereby extending our playing abilities.

We'll be using music we have already seen so there are no new songs this week, but the handout below will be useful. Please also bring along your music and handouts from previous sessions, as we will be using some of this material at the sessions.

I've included some handouts for beginners and intermediates; they're shown below so please print them off and bring them along to the session.

Session 9:

In this session, we're looking at a great folk song from the 1970's; "Streets of London" by Ralph McTell. The song can be played using either a strumming pattern or a finger picking style. With one guitar playing the strumming pattern and another playing the finger picking, the song has a real richness to it.

The version I have arranged for us to play here is simpler than Ralph's original, but I think it still captures the essence of the song. Come along to the next session where we'll start to work on this song.

Session 8:

Welcome to the new season of Wimborne Guitars coaching sessions! In the last session, we started looking at the song "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals. We only studied the guitar riff, but in this session we're going to work on the whole song.

This song can be played simply, or we can add some more detail to really capture the feel of the 1964 hit single. The handouts below explain a bit more about the playing of the song and as usual there is a full set of music and an audio file which you can download to play along to.

As usual, I've recorded the audio track slower than the original, to give you time to get your fingers around the different parts of the song.

Also in this session, we'll be going back over some of the material we looked at last season, so we make sure nobody gets left behind, so please bring all your material from last season with you.

Session 7:

Handouts:
This is our last session this season. To celebrate, we have a joint Beginners and Intermediates session. We're starting to look at 2 new songs, but we're going to learn the songs in stages. The first stage is to look at the guitar riffs used in the songs. Both songs are well known; "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals and "Don't Fear The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult. The riffs on these songs are instantly recognisable, so we want to get to grips with these riffs first.
Please download and print the PDF handout below:

Music:
The music for this session shows just the riffs and their associated chords. This means you can play the riff, or the chords, so this music works for both Bweginners and Intermediates to play together.

Session 6:

For the Intermediates I've provided my (almost) patented Wimborne Guitars Music Map! Talk about an early Christmas present!
Please download and print at least one copy of the Music Map (you'll need to cut it in half if you have one copy, or you can fold it over if you have two copies).
If the instructions are as clear as mud, don't worry, all will be explained at the session.

Music:
There's no new song this week. The handouts above will be used in conjunction with the songs we've been working on in previous sessions. Next week there will be a new song, which you can look at and learn over the Christmas break. We'll then get started with new material in January.

Learning new songs:
I discovered an app a while back which is quite useful. It's called "Anytune" and can be run on a smart phone or tablet. The app enables you to play a song, or just a section of a song, so you can learn it by ear. You can slow down the section you want to learn so that you can play it slowly at first, then gradually speed up. Click on the image below to be taken to the web site. You may find it helpful.

Please bring the handouts and music from all 3 previous sessions.
We'll also go back over what we've studied so far and answer any questions.

Effects Pedals:
I'll also be demonstrating these guitar pedals this week, following a request from our members.
